What is a Micro-Wedding?

A Micro-Wedding is something in between an elopement, which tends to be spontaneous and very private, and the traditional wedding that may involve over a hundred guests and more than a year of planning. It usually includes the components of a traditional wedding but with 20-40 guests or fewer. Couples that are looking for something more intimate, simple, and affordable are choosing to go this route.
There are generally two different reasons for keeping your guest list small. One is to simply limit your wedding budget. Perhaps you’d rather spend the money on something important in your lives right now, like education, a new car, or a downpayment on a home. Or you’d just rather have a nice small event without spending a lot of money. The other reason a couple might pare down their guest list is so they can do something extravagant they couldn’t afford for a lot of people, like a top shelf open bar, a delectable 4-course dinner, or a destination wedding that involves travel.
Either way, you don’t have give up any elements of a traditional wedding simply because you have fewer guests. You can still have a beautiful venue with the decor you want, a photographer, cake, dinner, dj, dancing...since everything is on a smaller scale it’s more affordable. Or maybe you’re not interested in certain traditional events like the bouquet or garter toss, or toasts, or you really don’t want to be the only ones on the dance floor for the “first dance”. That’s okay too, because you can plan your wedding any way you want to.
Some people with big families may fear they will hurt the feelings of those not invited. But if you gracefully make it clear that you have chosen to only include immediate family and very close personal friends, it’s likely they will understand. And consider the benefit of having just a few guests that you have a deep personal connection to, and how you’ll be able to spend quality time with each and every one.
At Terrapin Hill Farm, a Micro-Wedding will be tailored to each couple and their vision of their perfect wedding, just as the traditional weddings are. By limiting the number of guests, you can limit your budget and the planning, but the memories of the day you get married will still last forever.
